IT was once owned by the infamous Christopher Skase, then rescued to become a famous shipyard under Norman R Wright and Sons, and now The Boatyard Bulimba has hit a new high.
Three storeys high, that is. The development has entered the next stage of its journey, with the cement pour about to begin on the third of four eventual storeys on the development.
With a prime spot on the Brisbane River, developers Alistair Harvey and Simon Gundelach of HG Developments have been pleased with progress on the site.
Mr Harvey, whose family ran one of Queensland’s most prominent boatbuilding firms — Norman R Wright and Sons — off the site for decades, said it was the next step in its journey.
“The boatyard was positioned here for many decades. It’s now been relocated back down to Rivergate since we started The Boatyard development,” he told The Courier-Mail.

“It’s a lovely legacy piece. The name ‘The Boatyard’ is actually born from how my family referred to our old boatbuilding business as “the boatyard”, (it’s) very special.”
He said most development in the street were drawing inspiration from the precinct’s marine history.
“There’s been massive change in Byron Street. This precinct is going to be a real gamechanger for Bulimba.”

Mr Gundelach said construction was progressing well on the four buildings that were going up on the site.
“We’re pouring level three and we’ve got one more to go above that. We’re close to topping out, it should be topped out next month.”
He too expected the changes to “completely rejuvenate Byron Street”.

“You’ll notice down the street there are a fair few cranes up with projects also under construction as well. It’s going to be a premier waterfront address in Brisbane.”
The Boatyard Bulimba will have 26 two, three and four bedroom apartments designed by award-winning architects BVN Donovan Hill — 15 to the waterfront and 11 to the street.

Four terrace apartments and five waterfront apartments were currently available for sale with the rest already sold.
It’s being built by one of the biggest privately owned construction firms in the country — Queensland company Hutchinson, with construction expected to be complete in February next year.

The developers have decided to throw open the doors to the site this Saturday August 25 between 10am and 12 noon.
“We want to encourage locals to pop down and see what all the fuss is about for what is set to be one of the best developments in one of Brisbane’s best waterfront streets.”
