More than 300 primary school students are set of benefit from Yarrabilba’s latest education addition, with the first day of construction marked on March 10.
Education Minister Kate Jones turned the first sod when she met with Member for Logan Linus Power and representatives of the estate.
She said the $40 million primary school at Yarrabilba, which will open in January 2018, will cater to about 1100 students in the next 15 years.
“Yarrabilba is one of the the fastest growing areas in Queensland, so we are pleased to be able to fast-track this project to deliver the school one year earlier than first scheduled,” she said.
“You can already see all the houses and amount of young families currently residing at Yarrabilba, who would truly benefit from a great school.
“I am pleased to have officially marked construction, and over the next few months we’ll be working hard to get a principal appointed.”
Mr Power added the state primary school’s multi-purpose hall would also be completed by the faculty’s opening date.
“I’m really pleased Kate knew how much the community had grown and by seeing that, we were able to bring the opening date forward a lot sooner than we initially expected,” he said.
LendLease general manager Guy Gibson said the early announcement of Yarrabilba’s first state primary school was an exciting milestone for the community.
“Schools are a vital part of creating sustainable places where people want to live, work and play,” he said.
“Today we have almost 17,000 homes and more than 4500 residents, but by 2041 Yarrabilba will be home to more than 45,000 people and will have created 13,000 full-time jobs.”
The institution was one of three schools announced to be built over the next three years, under an $118 million contract awarded to FKG.
FKG group managing director Nick Gardener said construction had already started across the three sites.
“With more than 40 years construction experience, we are in a great position to ensure these communities receive state-of-the-art educational facilities that will stand the test of time.”
