A two-level skyhome overlooking Brisbane’s Story Bridge and the city skyline has sold for $6.15 million, the most expensive apartment sale in the city this year.
Darwin-based businessman Brooke David relinquished the 670sq m unit at 170 Bowen Terrace, New Farm, when he realised he wasn’t getting to Queensland as often as he expected.
“I had always planned to stay in Brisbane every second week but in the end I was only getting to Brisbane for three days of every month, so it was madness to keep it,” he said. “I’m sad to let it go but I’m happy it has sold.”
The four-bedroom, four-bathroom apartment — with an extraordinary bathroom featuring oversized tub and striking lighting — was “next level luxury”, according to agents New Farm Ray White’s Matt Lancashire and Christine Rudolph.
“We have many high net worth clients looking for very similar properties around Brisbane,” Mr Lancashire said.
Joint selling agent Sarah Hackett from Place Estate Agents said large prestige apartments were in demand, offering the size of a house without the maintenance.
The identity of the Queensland family who bought the property was undisclosed.
Late last year a two-level apartment in the Brisbane CBD sold for the year’s highest price of $8m, to businesswoman Therese Rein and her husband former prime minster Kevin Rudd.
Another prestige Brisbane apartment on the market is the penthouse of Freshwater apartments at Grey Street, New Farm.
Spanning 355sq m of north- facing river frontage, the penthouse was the planned retirement home of British expats Brian and Diane Ames. They have decided to move back to the UK despite their lifestyle in Brisbane.
“I love the long terrace overlooking the river where my plants and herbs all grow happily in the sunshine,” former Harrods Management director Mr Ames said.
According to the latest quarterly data from the Real Estate Institute of Queensland, New Farm has the most expensive houses in Queensland, with a median price of $1.64m. This increased 9.4 per cent in the last year and 35 per cent over the last five years.
Units across the suburb sold at an average of $535,000, a fall of 3.3 per cent in a year.
